أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ أَبِي سَهْلٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ ، عَنْ مُسَّةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا، قَالَتْ :" كَانَتْ النُّفَسَاءُ " تَجْلِسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا، أَوْ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً، وَكَانَتْ إِحْدَانَا تَطْلِي الْوَرْسَ عَلَى وَجْهِهَا مِنْ الْكَلَفِ "

Abu Al-Walid told us, Abu Khaythamah told us, Ali bin Abdul-Ala told us, on the authority of Abu Sahl Al-Basri, on the authority of Massah, on the authority of Umm Salamah, may God be pleased with her, said: During the time of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, postpartum women used to stay for forty days, or forty nights. One of us used to paint the paint on her face because of the melasma.”
