أَخْبَرَنَا عِصْمَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الضَّحَّاكُ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ لَقِيَهُ فِي الطَّوَافِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ : " يَا أَبَا الشَّعْثَاءِإِنَّكَ مِنْ فُقَهَاءِ الْبَصْرَةِ فَلَا تُفْتِ إِلَّا بِقُرْآنٍ نَاطِقٍ، أَوْ سُنَّةٍ مَاضِيَةٍ، فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ فَعَلْتَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ، هَلَكْتَ وَأَهْلَكْتَ "

Isma bin Al-Fadl told us, Zaid bin Al-Hubab told us, on the authority of Yazid bin Uqba, Al-Dahhak told us, on the authority of Jabir bin Zaid, that Ibn Omar met him while circumambulating, and said to him: “O Abu Al-Sha’a’a, you are one of the jurists of Basra, so do not issue fatwas except with a speaking Qur’an, or a previous Sunnah, for you If you do otherwise, you will perish and be destroyed.”
