  • Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal – مسند أحمد بن حنبل – Hadith #164

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ذُكِرَ لِعُمَرَ أَنَّ سَمُرَةَ، وَقَالَ، مَرَّةً بَلَغَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ سَمُرَةَ بَاعَ خَمْرًا قَالَ قَاتَلَ اللَّهُ سَمُرَةَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ الشُّحُومُ فَجَمَلُوهَا فَبَاعُوهَا‏.‏

    ‘Umar was told ­and on one occasion he said: Umar heard that Samurah was selling alcohol and he said: May Allah destroy Samurah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: `May Allah curse the Jews,
    He forbade animal fat to them, so they rendered it and sold it.`

  • Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal – مسند أحمد بن حنبل – Hadith #163

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ قَالَ الصُّبَيُّ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ كُنْتُ رَجُلًا نَصْرَانِيًّا فَأَسْلَمْتُ فَأَهْلَلْتُ بِالْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ فَسَمِعَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ وَسَلْمَانُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ وَأَنَا أُهِلُّ بِهِمَا فَقَالَا لَهَذَا أَضَلُّ مِنْ بَعِيرِ أَهْلِهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا حُمِلَ عَلَيَّ بِكَلِمَتِهِمَا جَبَلٌ فَقَدِمْتُ عَلَى عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِمَا فَلَامَهُمَا وَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ هُدِيتَ لِسُنَّةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هُدِيتَ لِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ عَبْدَةُ قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ كَثِيرًا مَا ذَهَبْتُ أَنَا وَمَسْرُوقٌ إِلَى الصُّبَيِّ نَسْأَلُهُ عَنْهُ‏.‏

    as­-Subayy bin Ma’bad said: I was a Christian man and I became Muslim, and I entered ihram for both Hajj and ‘Umrah (together). Zaid bin Soohan and Salman bin Rabee’ah heard me ­­­when I was entering ihram for both and said. He is more astray than his people’s camel. Their words wounded me greatly, so I went to ‘Umar and told him. He turned to them and criticised them, then he turned to me and said: You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ, you have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ.

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ يَحْيَى، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ وَقَّاصٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّةِ وَلِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ وَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوْ امْرَأَةٍ يَنْكِحُهَا فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ‏.‏

    I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: `Deeds are but by intentions and each

    man will have but that which he intended. If a man’s migration was for the sake of Allah, then his

    migration was for that for which he migrated, but if his migration was to achieve some worldly aim

    or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated.`

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عُمَرَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ تَابِعُوا بَيْنَ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ فَإِنَّ مُتَابَعَةً بَيْنَهُمَا يَنْفِيَانِ الْفَقْرَ وَالذُّنُوبَ كَمَا يَنْفِي الْكِيرُ خَبَثَ الْحَدِيدِ‏.‏

    from the Prophet ﷺ- that he said: `Follow Hajj with ‘Umrah and ‘Umrah with Hajj, for doing that will eliminate poverty and sin as the bellows eliminate dross.`

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، حَمَلَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَرَآهَا أَوْ بَعْضَ نِتَاجِهَا يُبَاعُ فَأَرَادَ شِرَاءَهُ فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ اتْرُكْهَا تُوَافِكَ أَوْ تَلْقَهَا جَمِيعًا وَقَالَ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَنَهَاهُ وَقَالَ لَا تَشْتَرِهِ وَلَا تَعُدْ فِي صَدَقَتِكَ‏.‏

    `Leave it, and it (its reward) will come to you or you will have them all (i.e., the reward of all of them).` On one occasion he said: He told him not to (buy it) and he said:

    “Do not buy it and do not take back your charity.`

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَيَنَامُ أَحَدُنَا وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ قَالَ يَتَوَضَّأُ وَيَنَامُ إِنْ شَاءَ وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً لِيَتَوَضَّأْ وَلْيَنَمْ‏.‏

    Can one of us sleep when he is junub? He said: “He may do wudoo’ and sleep if he wishes.” On one occasion

    Sufyan said: `Let him do wudoo’ and sleep.`

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تُطْرُونِي كَمَا أَطْرَتْ النَّصَارَى عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا عَبْدٌ فَقُولُوا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ‏.‏

    The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not praise me as the Christians praised ‘Eesa ibn Maryam عليه السلام. I am no more than a slave, so say: His slave and His Messenger.”

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، سَمِعَ أَبَا عُبَيْدٍ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ الْعِيدَ مَعَ عُمَرَ فَبَدَأَ بِالصَّلَاةِ قَبْلَ الْخُطْبَةِ وَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ صِيَامِ هَذَيْنِ الْيَوْمَيْنِ أَمَّا يَوْمُ الْفِطْرِ فَفِطْرُكُمْ مِنْ صَوْمِكُمْ وَأَمَّا يَوْمُ الْأَضْحَى فَكُلُوا مِنْ لَحْمِ نُسُكِكُمْ‏.‏

    I was present at Eid with ‘Umar, and he started with the prayer before the khutbah. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade fasting on

    these two days. The day of al-Fitr is the day when you break your fast, and on the day of al-Adha,

    eat the meat of your sacrifices.

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، سَمِعَ مَالِكَ بْنَ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ، سَمِعَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الذَّهَبُ بِالْوَرِقِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَاءَ وَهَاءَ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ رِبًا إِلَّا هَاءَ وَهَاءَ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَاءَ وَهَاءَ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَاءَ وَهَاءَ‏.‏

    The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said ­- and on one occasion Sufyan said: heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say ­ “Gold for silver is riba unless it is exchanged on the spot [lit. ‘this for that’), wheat for wheat is riba unless it is exchanged on the spot, barley for barley is riba unless it is exchanged on the spot, dates for dates is riba unless it is exchanged on the spot.”

    حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، أَنَّ يَحْيَى بْنَ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ بِالْعَقِيقِ يَقُولُ أَتَانِي اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي فَقَالَ صَلِّ فِي هَذَا الْوَادِي الْمُبَارَكِ وَقُلْ عُمْرَةٌ فِي حَجَّةٍ قَالَ الْوَلِيدُ يَعْنِي ذَا الْحُلَيْفَةِ‏.‏

    I heard ‘Umar bin al Khattab رضي الله عنه say: l heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, when he was in al­’Aqeeq: `Last night someone came to me from my Lord and said: Pray in this blessed valley and say, ‘I intend to do ‘umrah with Hajj.` Al-Waleed said: i.e., in Dhul­-Hulaifah.
