Sunan al-Darimi – سنن الدارمي – Hadith #69

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ حَدَّثَنِي عَطِيَّةُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ الْكَلَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ :" إِنَّمَا الْعَيْنَانِ وِكَاءُ السَّهِ، فَإِذَا نَامَتْ الْعَيْنُ، اسْتَطْلَقَ الْوِكَاءُ "، قِيلَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : تَقُولُ بِهِ؟، قَالَ : لَا، إِذَا نَامَ قَائِمًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ الْوُضُوءُ
Muhammad ibn al-Mubarak informed us, Baqiyya ibn al-Walid informed us, on the authority of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Maryam, Atiyya ibn Qais al-Kala’i told me, On the authority of Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan, may God be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “The eyes are only the protectors of sleep, so when the eye sleeps, Al-Waka' was released." It was said to Abu Muhammad Abdullah: What do you say about him? He said: No. If he sleeps standing up, he does not have to perform ablution.
