Abdul Wahhab bin Saeed told us, Shuaib bin Ishaq told us, on the authority of Hisham bin Urwa, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Aisha, she said: “ The day of Ashura was a day on which the Quraysh fasted in pre-Islamic times. When the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to Medina, he fasted and ordered his fasting. Even when Ramadan was imposed, Ramadan was the obligatory one, and the day of Ashura was left out, so whoever wanted to fast it, and whoever wanted to leave it.”
