أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَوَّامُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، قَالَ : بَلَغَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَنَّ عِنْدَ نَاسٍ كِتَابًا يُعْجَبُونَ بِهِ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ بِهِمْ حَتَّى أَتَوْهُ بِهِ، فَمَحَاهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ :" إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ قَبْلَكُمْ : أَنَّهُمْ أَقْبَلُوا عَلَى كُتُبِ عُلَمَائِهِمْ، وَتَرَكُوا كِتَابَ رَبِّهِمْ "

Yazid told us, the common people told us, on the authority of Ibrahim al-Taymi, he said: Ibn Masoud, may God be pleased with him, reported that some people have a book they admire. With it, he remained with them until they brought it, so he erased it, then said: “The People of the Book perished before you only because they turned to the Book their scholars, and they abandoned the Book of their Lord.”
